Gina Furia Rubel Talks Everyday PR at Delaware Valley University [Gina Rubel Featured in Podcast Interview]
Gina Rubel, CEO & General Counsel of Furia Rubel, spoke with Delaware Valley University Assistant Professor Marion Callahan and her public relations students about PR as a career path and important tips for successful interactions with the media. Rubel’s book Everyday PR: Harnessing Public Relations to Build Relationships, Brands & Businesses is taught in Callahan’s course. The discussion highlights some of the key lessons Rubel has learned over her career as a PR strategist.
Rubel emphasizes that all interactions contribute to an individual’s or organization’s brand: “Everything you do is public relations. Every letter you write, every email you send, every text you send, every social media post you put out there is public relations because you’re speaking to a public.”
Rubel also provided guidance on crafting successful headlines for press releases. “You don’t want to tell the whole story in the headline, but you want to say just enough that you can grab somebody’s attention,” she said, adding that the entire message should be captured “in one to two sentences in the first paragraph.”
Rubel noted a key philosophy in approaching crisis work: “Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance,” which allowed Furia Rubel to successfully navigate the COVID pandemic by transitioning to an entirely virtual model and expanding its footprint with employees based throughout the country.
Rubel’s advises PR students to be prepared to adapt to a changing world. “You have to learn the art of agility,” she said. “That means making calls on the fly. Things change constantly. If anything, [learning in a new environment during COVID] strengthened all of you to be able to figure that out.”
