Law firms that have been targeted by executive actions from the Trump administration are responding in a variety of ways. Furia Rubel CEO & general counsel Gina Rubel discussed the factors influencing these firms. “No two situations are alike. No two jurisdictions are alike. There are many decisions that go into handling these matters for law firms,” she said, adding that “not everyone is going to love” the decisions firms make.
Rubel noted that law firms are “doing a legal and cost analysis, and saying, ‘What is in our clients’ best interest? What is in our best interest? Who do we want to be at the end of this? How much is too much?”
Paul Weiss has made a deal with the administration, agreeing to pay more than $40 million for pro bono support on behalf of veterans and to combat antisemitism. Other firms, like Covington & Burling and Perkins Coie, are pursuing litigation against the administration. There is mounting pressure for law firm leaders to speak out against these executive actions. As firms continue to navigate these political attacks, they must continue to weigh the impact of their decisions on stakeholders.
