Bar Functions, Trade Meetings, Networking and More: Getting Attention in 30 Seconds or Less

In today’s competitive market, associates and partners alike are encouraged and even expected to network, market their services, and rain-make. I can’t tell  you how many times I’ve met someone at a bar function and when I ask, “So what do you do?” the answer is, “I’m an attorney.” My silent response: “No kidding!” As harsh as this sounds, it’s true. It is up to you, the attorney, to communicate what it is that you do and you need to do it in roughly 30 seconds or less. Some call it the “30-second commercial” and others call it the “elevator speech” or “pitch.” All you really need to know is that you have a very short time to get your message across and you need to make it effective — so what are you going to say?
